We’re grateful to be partnering with the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma* which for 37 years has been serving Oklahomans struggling with hunger in 53 central and western Oklahoma counties. Together, along with our other food partners, we’re aiming to raise one million meals for the children, seniors and families in need of food assistance as part of our 1 Million Meals initiative.

To learn more about the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma, we did a Q&A with Angie Doss, director of marketing and communications for the organization.

What’s your involvement with Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma, and how did you get started?
I have been working for the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma for eight years, and I absolutely believe in the organization’s mission, “Fighting Hunger…Feeding Hope.” One in six Oklahomans has inconsistent access to food, and that’s why this organization – and support from the community – is so important. No child should ever go to bed hungry and seniors shouldn’t have to choose between paying for food and medicine. The Regional Food Bank is here to serve the community, and being a part of that is really powerful.

What’s a compelling experience you’ve had during your time with Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma?
We hear stories from our coordinators and agencies every day about the impact the Regional Food Bank has on the community. One time I was talking to a woman in her eighties who was getting groceries at a Fresh Food Mobile Market, which is a program where clients receive fresh produce, meat and more in a farmer’s market type setting. She shared that she often has to choose between paying for costly medicine and groceries. She worked throughout her life, and after retiring she volunteered with AARP for many years. And yet, it still wasn’t enough.

We also receive drawings from kids, and those always reconfirm why the Regional Food Bank is needed to fight hunger in the community.

How can people get involved with Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma?
One way to get involved is to make a donation. Every dollar donated to the Regional Food Bank will provide the equivalent of five meals for Oklahomans with inconsistent access to food. Our administration and fundraising costs are four percent, so 96 cents of every dollar donated goes to fight hunger.

The Regional Food Bank is also in need of volunteers year-round. Every day volunteers pack enough food to fill a semi-truck. Last fiscal year, more than 42,000 volunteers donated nearly 203,000 hours of service, which saved the Regional Food Bank more than $4.3 million in labor costs! Volunteer tasks include bagging and boxing food products and assembling Food for Kids sacks of food. Learn more* about volunteering.

We’d love to have you involved in our 1 Million Meals initiative to help the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma* and our other food partners.
